What very old Extras are you still using!

I still use TemplateRules by Cipa:

from 11 years ago.
There may be a later solution, but this still ticks along on a few of my sites.

Not sure its the same as the configuration settings where you can set the default Template and underlying pages. [(auto_template_logic)].

Not quite. You can set a set of templates to be used for different levels starting from a particular parent. You can also set specific templates to be visible for selection at different levels. It is quite powerful.

Ah nice, can be handy indeed! Makes it easy for manager users who forget to set templates 🙂
And off course you can force them to use a certain template. Would have been handy for a project I just finished.
Really need to make a demo for myself and test allot of plugins..

Did had some issues with "hard" browser caching or something. Took a while to redirect to the correct new upper page. But I don't think there is a better replacement one which works a bit better.

By default FirstChildRedirect uses 301 permanent redirect.
You can change it to use 302 temporary redirect using responseCode parameter... then there is no browser caching of the redirect... but at the expense of SEO. If the child pages are changing often it can help.

Hey,
That's really great, its amazing that TemplateRules by Cipa is still working smoothly on your sites after all these years. Even though there are new tools available now, if this one continue to serve your needs well, there's really no need to change it.
